2 Weeks in the Hospital

How could it be two weeks already? Would Dad ever get out of ICU?

By Monday, April 13, my e-mail list of praying friends had grown to 25. Most of them were dear friends who I knew from childhood and some were recent friends from church and Bible study. Together, they were my support during this time. Even though we couldn’t see each other, they sent me e-mails with verses and words of encouragement. My aunt (Dad’s sister), wrote me notes and called me to see how I was doing.

Monday marked exactly 2 weeks since Dad had been admitted to the hospital. That day, the doctor actually called and talked to Mom. He told her that because Dad was trying to breathe on his own, they were going to lower the ventilator settings and try to get his lungs strengthened. This was the first sign we’d had to indicate that the doctors thought Dad might be improving. We were so excited!

But, as seemed to happen, along with the good news came bad news. Dad’s blood pressure was really fluctuating as they tried to wean him off the meds that kept him sedated. Dad had never had blood pressure trouble before, so we thought it might be related to the many medications he was on.

By now, Mom was utterly exhausted and she was having trouble sleeping. I began asking my friends to pray for Mom to sleep peacefully at night.

God kept reminding me of the verse He gave me from Habakkuk 2:3 “though it tarry, wait for it…”
