Stepping Into 2022

Writer's picture: CreekSparrowCreekSparrow

Back in my college days when I studied in England for a semester, I came across this poem. It was used by King George VI in a Christmas radio broadcast during WWII when the darkness of war held the country in fear and the unknown stretched frighteningly ahead of them. Today it seems appropriate to remind ourselves that God, who sees all that the future holds, is beside us as we walk into 2022. After all, the Christmas joy we celebrated just last week can still be here, because He is still here, Immanuel, God with us.

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.” So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East. by Minnie Louise Haskins

Below is a link to the story of the Christmas broadcast with a short recording of the king's speech and a Wikipedia article that contains the entire poem.
