Final Zoom Meeting

On Sunday, June 7, Dad had reason to rejoice—his first granddaughter was born! He had been waiting for her to arrive, and he was so happy to have her join my brother’s family! New life! What a blessing!

During the first week, Dad had mentioned how cold he was, so I’d sent him a soft fleece blanket through the "magic" of Amazon. When I called him in the evenings, I liked to imagine him in bed covered in his cozy blanket chatting with me. It was a really special time after so many weeks of silence on the other end of the phone!

On June 12, we participated in a Zoom meeting with the staff at the rehab facility. Mom worked hard trying to get it organized and we were afraid it might not happen, but Mom got it done! I was so proud of her. She has always been a sweet, quiet person, but there was another side to her that I rarely saw--she was a fighter! And she had fought like crazy for Dad over the past few months because that was the only way for us to get help or information, and she was determined to do whatever she needed to bring Dad home!

During the conference call we were able to see and talk to Dad who was sitting in a wheelchair, dressed in one of his buttoned shirts (that Mom and a dear friend had brought him), looking really good after all he'd been through! It was such a blessing, and it took me back to the first conference call we had in April with the doctors when Dad was still in the hospital. He hadn't been doing well, and we didn't know what was going to happen. When the doctor brought the computer into Dad's room and we saw him for the first time since he'd been admitted with COVID-19, he looked so sick. But even though he was unconscious, he moved his mittened hands in response to Mom's voice.

It absolutely amazed me as I saw Dad on the screen now! God had answered so many prayers and had brought Dad so far; it didn't even seem real! "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits; who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases; who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion..." (Psalm 103:2-4). Amen!

The best part was that the meeting resulted in Dad’s doctor getting some things addressed that needed to be taken care of so that Dad could continue improving.
