Wednesday, May 20, my brother actually called the rehab hospital's corporate office and spoke to the president and CEO of the company. He explained the difficulty we were having—and that many families of sedated patients were having—because of COVID and the inability to visit loved ones. I have no idea whether they have a better system now for the families and patients, but I certainly hope so. One of my brother’s reasons for calling was that we didn’t want other families to have to go through the frustration we did in trying to contact their loved ones.
That afternoon, I got a call from a sweet nurse we’d never had before. She said she was calling on the tablet from Dad’s room, but she couldn’t get through to Mom. I tried several times to get Mom, and when I finally succeeded, I told her to call the nurses’ desk. But she was told that Rachel wasn’t available because she was in Dad’s room.
I kept wondering why God wouldn’t just work it out for Mom to talk to Dad. Then He reminded me of Isaiah about how He will teach you the way to go. I thought, “I should at least call and leave a message to thank Rachel for trying.” I called and told the receptionist to just let Rachel know that Mom was available and to thank her so much for trying to call. Within half an hour, Rachel called Mom from Dad's room, and Mom was able to talk to Dad for 13 minutes!
It really was a miracle, especially since we didn't even ask the nurse to call, we just asked if the night nurse could call! Mom told me that today this verse was going through her head: "Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." Jeremiah 33:3 We rejoiced as we saw God stepping in and intervening for us.
