Easter Hope

On Saturday, Dad was able to be taken off of the blood pressure medication, and the nurse mentioned that they had lowered Dad's sedation and he was trying to breathe on his own. Mom and I were thrilled by this news. Maybe, we thought, Dad hearing Mom's voice had really helped him.

Mom had been told that she wouldn't be able to talk to Dad over the weekend, so she didn't talk to him on Saturday. On Easter Sunday morning, the nurse told Mom that Dad had stopped trying to breathe on his own. Mom was so discouraged, and we wondered whether Dad really had rallied because of hearing Mom's voice. Now that she hadn't talked to him for a day, was he beginning to get worse?

Then, good news! Even though it was the weekend, the hospital scheduled a call for Mom to talk to Dad for 15 minutes that afternoon. "It's my Easter miracle!" Mom told me excitedly.

I was happy for Mom, but knowing that a friend was praying for Dad to miraculously recover on Easter Sunday, our miracle seemed small. I couldn't help wishing that God would work a "real" miracle and healed Dad.

Late that afternoon when she gave Mom the daily update, the nurse said that Dad was trying to breathe on his own a little bit again. So Mom's call was more of a miracle than I'd thought. It was also confirmation that Mom's voice was indeed helping Dad, and God was still at work.

The hospital gave Mom a phone number that she was allowed to call once a day. Then a volunteer would take her call and hold the phone to Dad's ear so he could hear her. This was a new system the hospital had just put into place and we were very grateful for it--especially since she was told on Friday that she might be able to talk to him just be once a week. We were so grateful that God once again gave us the grace and encouragement we needed so desperately needed!
